CAIRO, June 24 (World Daily Times) — Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said archaeologists uncovered a funerary cache beneath a burial structure at the Panhesy tomb site in the Matariya area of Ain Shams, inside the Heliopolis necropolis.
The ministry announced the discovery May 31 and said the burial structure contained human remains. Officials said the cache included five pairs of yellow-colored metal earrings believed to be made of gold, carved scarabs, a copper mirror, cosmetic containers and four stones, two of them believed to be agate.
Pictures released by the ministry also showed two alabaster kohl containers with traces of ancient eye makeup and a third kohl container made of black obsidian. Officials said the group of objects was the “first nearly complete funerary assemblage ever discovered in the area.”
The ministry said the find built on earlier discoveries at the site during the same excavation season, including mudbrick and limestone funerary structures and two coffins found in fragmented condition.
