OJAI, Calif., July 24 (Our California Times) — For people following the Big Bear bald eagles, the latest update is encouraging but still serious: Jackie has received a blood transfusion that caregivers say was life-saving, and her kidney inflammation appears to be improving. But the Ojai Raptor Center says she remains in critical care because she is still severely anemic and the cause of her illness has not yet been found.

Severe anemia means the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen well. In an eagle, as in a person, that can quickly become dangerous. A transfusion can give the bird time while veterinarians keep looking for the reason the illness started.

What doctors have learned so far

Friends of Big Bear Valley, which monitors the nest Jackie shares with Shadow, said Jackie was taken in for a CT scan and that there were no obvious signs of cancer or metals in her body. The Ojai Raptor Center also said tests have ruled out lead toxicosis and foreign objects such as fishing hooks, lines, weights, and other metal items.

That does not mean the search is over. The veterinary team is still working to determine what made her sick, and caregivers say it is still too early to give a reliable prognosis.

Why the transfusion mattered

The center said the transfusion was made possible with help from Spirit, the resident bald eagle at California Living Museum in Bakersfield. In wildlife care, that kind of donor support can be critical when a bird is too weak to recover on its own.

After the transfusion, caregivers reported that Jackie’s kidney inflammation seems to have improved. They also said she is eating well, perching, and appears bright and strong, even though she remains seriously ill.

What happens at the nest while Jackie is away

Friends of Big Bear Valley said Jackie had not been seen for days at the nest she shares with Shadow, which the nonprofit watches through a live stream. In her absence, the group said Shadow has continued to care for Sandy and Luna, the pair’s eaglets, and has also protected the nest from other subadult eagles in the area.

The source material says Sandy and Luna are old enough to fly and fend for themselves with help from Shadow, which is why the nest can still function while Jackie is in treatment.

The bigger picture

For viewers of the Big Bear nest, the update is a reminder that “better” does not always mean “out of danger.” Jackie’s improvement is a good sign, but her case is still being treated as critical until veterinarians can identify the cause and see whether her body keeps responding.

For now, caregivers say they will keep watching her closely and share more updates as test results come in.
