ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 22 (DC Times Online) — Maryland election officials removed Ian Andre Roberts from the state voter rolls on June 2, according to The Washington Times, after records showed he had remained registered for more than a decade and had been listed twice.
Republican Delegate Matt Morgan, who chairs the Maryland House Freedom Caucus, said the case shows why “Marylanders have lost faith in our elections.” Morgan and other Republicans have pressed state officials for more information about how Roberts stayed on the rolls.
The Washington Times reported that Maryland registration forms showed Roberts checked the citizenship box and signed under penalty of perjury twice. The paper also reported that the state kept mailing absentee ballots to Roberts, though it did not say whether he cast a ballot.
Fox News reported in January that Maryland elections administrator Jared DeMarinis warned against “improper cancellation,” a term used for removing eligible voters by mistake. The same reporting said congressional Republicans, including Wisconsin Rep. Bryan Steil, continued to seek answers from Maryland election officials.
The reports did not include the Maryland State Board of Elections’ full explanation for the June 2 removal or whether the state changed its verification procedures after the case drew scrutiny.
