Sacramento, California (Times Media Service) – As the May 2025 REAL ID deadline approaches, the California DMV is extending office hours to help Paso Robles residents and others across the state secure their REAL ID, which will soon be required for domestic flights and entry to federal buildings.

What Is the REAL ID and Why Is It Important?

The REAL ID is a new, federally approved form of identification that will be required for boarding domestic flights and entering secure federal facilities starting May 7, 2025. The California DMV is urging residents to obtain their REAL ID before the deadline to avoid travel disruptions. Without a REAL ID or another approved document, such as a passport, travelers will not be able to board domestic flights or access certain federal buildings.

DMV Extends Hours for REAL ID Appointments

To meet the surge in demand, the California DMV is extending hours at 18 offices statewide, but not including locations accessible toPaso Robles residents. These offices will open at 7 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, exclusively for REAL ID appointments. The extended hours will continue through June 27, 2025, giving residents more opportunities to complete the process.

How to Get Your REAL ID in Paso Robles

Applying for a REAL ID requires several steps. Residents should start by filling out an online application at REALID.dmv.ca.gov. Applicants must bring one document proving identity, two documents showing California residency, and their Social Security number. If your name has changed, bring legal proof of the change. The DMV recommends making an appointment and gathering all documents in advance to speed up the process.

Why the REAL ID Deadline Matters for Travelers

After May 7, 2025, standard California driver’s licenses will no longer be accepted for domestic air travel or entry to secure federal buildings. The REAL ID Act, passed after the September 11 attacks, aims to improve national security by making identification harder to forge. Missing the deadline could mean canceled travel plans or denied access to important federal services.

Who Needs a REAL ID and Who Doesn’t?

You need a REAL ID if you plan to fly within the United States or enter secure federal facilities and do not have a valid passport. You do not need a REAL ID to drive, vote, receive federal benefits, or visit hospitals and post offices. If you already have a valid U.S. passport, you can use it for travel and wait to get a REAL ID when your license is up for renewal.

Tips for a Smooth REAL ID Application

  • Start your application online to save time.
  • Gather all required documents before your appointment.
  • Book an early morning slot if you need your REAL ID soon.
  • Check the DMV website for the nearest participating office.

Paso Robles Residents: Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

With the REAL ID deadline fast approaching, Paso Robles residents are encouraged to act now. The DMV’s extended hours are designed to help everyone get their REAL ID before the rush. Avoid long lines and travel headaches by starting your application today.
